RSS readers

Looking for some good, clean RSS readers! Google Reader just doesn't do it for me, somehow – there's something clunky about it.

I am running 10.6 and do not plan on upgrading to Lion.

(My reasons for this, as I expect people to ask: I rely on my copy of Adobe CS5 that is not entirely legal, and $20 is a HUGE amount of money for me right now. I just bought this $2,000 computer a year ago!)

I'm using Reeder, which is 10ish dollars in the app store and I was using it before I upgraded with no problems. There's also NetNewsWire, which is free and the ads aren't terribly intrusive. It's what I was using before Reeder and is pretty much the RSS reader for a lot of people. They both sync with your google reader account, or you can add feeds to them directly.

I started using Reeder about a month ago, and really like it - quick browsing through feeds where I don't want to read everything, single keystroke commands to load something in my browser (if I want to read comments, etc.)

It links to a Google Reader account, but you can do most management tasks (maybe all of them?) from the program once you've got it set up - certainly adding/removing/moving feeds in folders (though you might have to set up the folder in Google Reader.)

Get on the Mac App Store and check out NetNewsWire Lite. It's not the same as the version twtd linked to -- it's sort of a preview of the improved (4.0) codebase all the NNW versions will eventually use. I can't use it yet, because it doesn't sync with Google Reader (which I need), but I wish I could -- it's just incredibly smooth and fast.

Pretty much everything I've heard on the subject comes down to the choice between NetNewsWire and Reeder. NetNewsWire is free, so that should be your first stop - either the standard version on their website or the preview of the new version which is in the App Store, depending on the features you need.

Fever (feedafever.com, $30) + Chill Pill ($2) = awesome. But if $20 is a lot for you, NetNewsWire Lite is the only option.
