Major thanks to the person who pointed out bestmacsoftware.org, which I hadn't seen before. That and the Apple Downloads site are the best places to start, since they feature the good stuff.

MacUpdate & VersionTracker focus on listing every application under the sun regardless of quality, so they're more useful as search engines.

I also included MacHeist just for reference, although it's not active right now.

Best known for its infinite number of extensions.
Safari (Free)
Included with Mac OS X; these days it's also available for Windows.

Coda ($99)
Integrated development environment for building web sites. Highly recommended.
Transmit ($30)
File transfer client. Supports FTP, SFTP & WebDAV.
CSSEdit (€30)
Specialized editor for CSS development.
